Amount of destruction is incredible. Some exceptionally sad stories unfolding as the search for victims slows after dark. I helped with search and rescue for a brief period before daylight faded. The extensive area and level of destruction is making searches very difficult.

I’m going to grab a few hours of sleep and resume helping and/or covering the story.

Persons in Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska and near-by areas should keep alert for significant weather over the next three days. Strong tornadoes, including violent tornadoes after dark, will be possible. Hail, to the size of grapefruits are also possible. The best way to stay safe is to be alert for changing weather in your area and monitor National Weather Service Radio and live television reports. Make sure children know what to do and where to go if dangerous weather strikes. And most importantly, DO NOT WAIT UNTIL VIOLENT WEATHER IS A SERIOUS THREAT BEFORE YOU TAKE ACTION! This is one of the main reasons people perish during violent weather. Consider cancelling outdoor events, or large gatherings were people may not be able to find shelter. The best shelter during extreme weather is generally in an underground shelter.

This years overall pattern is somewhat similar to last year. Strong jet stream energy, warm Gulf moisture and contrasting air masses are becoming increasingly closer to merging at the right time. Several potentially dangerous tornado events were narrowly averted this winter when the necessary elements were out of sync. As usual, the timing will become increasingly favorable as we head into late February and March, followed by the classic threats in April, May and June.

The best way to stay safe is to follow my three, tired and true rules:

1: Monitor the weather on any risk day. Keep an ear to the radio, television and keep your weather alert radio on. (Check the batteries and replace with Storm Chaser Approved® Energizer Lithium’s).

2: Have a plan and know the area you live or travel in. Know where the nearest substantial shelter is located. Know how long it takes to get there. if traveling, avoid driving when dangerous weather is forecast or present. Never drive into a threatening storm or try to outrun one.

3: Take Action! Don’t wait to take shelter! Make sure you family knows how to react when there is a severe weather threat.

Although there are many element to severe weather survival, these three basic rules can save lives.
